Artists Nina Gerada and Caz Hildebrand spent time working together at WH Collier, handmade brickmakers in Essex. They used existing brick ‘specials’ to create a series of responses to the bricks, exploring series, repetitions, modular structures and playful subversions of the bricks intended functions.
These exercises led to a performance-based work, with each artist placing bricks in turn – a call and response sequence – using different brick shapes to create a spontaneous piece. We use this method for developing wall and floor relief works.
